Jyotish Time Units

Dear Friends,

Jyotish is study of Time and karma on individual. One of the important steps to understand Time is the various ways to measure it. This gives better understanding of Time's various properties or Moods.

In Jyotish, basic unit of Time is called Ahoratra (One Day and Night). Aho is Day and Ratra is Night. The various types of measure is derived from this basic units.

Various types of division is done on this Basic Unit of Ahoratra, There is division by 2 (day/night), 8(Yama), 8+8(kaala), 12 (Rashi/Bhaava), 24 (hora), 15+15 (Muhurtha), 60 (Nadi).

Let me list them out, in regular measure of hours, for your easy reference in your future studies,

Praana pada	6 Minutes	Pada means quarter, It's Quarter of a Naadi. It's 20th of a Bhaava.

Significance of each for of Division,

Divide by 2: Jyotish shastra also called Hora Shastra basic division is by 2. Where each creations Purusha and Prakriti influence is noted.

Divide by 12: Twelve is number associated with Sun. Divide by 12 is called Arkamsha or Suryamsha. Sun is supposed to have 12 forms.

Divide by 8: This is derived from 8 spokes of Kaala chakra, The divide by eight shows Kaala's blocking nature. The 8 signifies Praana or longevity, the 8th house in Jyotish denotes it. It's Time measured in Praanas or breaths in human lives.
Kaalam unit of times is derived from this. Units indentified thus are like Raahu Kaalam, Gullika Kaalam etc.


Divide by 15: The jyotish term for divide by 15 is called Tithi amsha. Tithi means 15 to denote the 15 faces of Moon.


Further sub-division of the above units can also be made. Such division's nomenclature is by adding prefixes to above notations. For example, "Vi" is prefix is to indicate further division of the unit by 60, Like Vi+Naadika or Vi+Ghaatika, Vinaadi/Vighatika is 60th part of 24 Minutes hence is 24 Seconds.

The Above measures of time is used to derived various divisional chart in Jyotish and the influence on the person. The time period which the person is "sticking to" Lagna is called Rashi Lagna, Bhaava Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna, Vighatika Lagna etc.


Above given are some of the basic demarcations of time. Detailed study can be made from books on Panchanga.

Name Mumbai/Bombay ?

Flood control: Astrologers say calamities like 26/7 last year, will continue for seven-and-a-half years
The name Mumbai is unlucky for the city. In fact, leading astrologers say (without a trace of irony), 2005 saw the beginning of the Shani dosh (Saturn rules the city making it unlucky), which will continue for the next seven-and-a-half years.

This means Mumbai will undergo a series of calamities. Illustrating their point, astrologers say floods, leptospirosis, malnutrition and a stock exchange crash, which began last year, proves what the stars foretell. The solution? Changing the name back to Bombay.

Bombay lucky

Said astrologer Bejan Daruwala, “I feel the name Bombay is better than Mumbai. If the city wants to progress, it’s correct to say that the name Bombay is 100 times better than Mumbai.”

Added astro-numerologist R D Pala, “Venus is the ruling planet for Bombay under Taurus. Whereas Saturn (Shani) rules under Leo in the case of Mumbai for seven-and-half years. This is called a Sade saati. Natural calamities have increased and are expected to increase. Saturn causes sufferings and therefore it is advisable to rename Mumbai as Bombay.”

Proud of new name

Former chief minister Manohar Joshi, who ushered in the name change in 1995 said, “It just shows that some people are still not accustomed to the fact that Bombay has been renamed Mumbai. The name change of the city was in tune with Maharashtra’s culture and any Maharashtrian should be proud of it. I believe, those who really love Mumbai and Maharashtra are proud of the new name.”

He says the misfortune surrounding the name change is humbug. “I simply don’t believe in such superstitions. How can we say that the city is going through a bad phase after the name change? Was it better before the name change? On the contrary, I strongly believe that the city, slowly but surely, is being developed.”

my own opinion

mumbai={530}=035=11= Aquarius

Assigning Katpayaadi numerals to alphabets (neglecting half sounds).

ma = 5
ba=3
ee=0

bombay={440}=044=8= Scorpio

bha= 4
bha=4
e=0

Mumbai=Aquarius being Natural 11th house and trines to Libra is good for financial well being of the city. Libra is a fruitful sign having blessings of Mahalakshmi. In fact the current transit of Saturn in 6th from Aquarius is good.
I am sure the matters of flood etc can be explained by Annual Chart for India of that particular year. Please refer my earlier post on similar topic on Annual Charts.

So The New name should prove better than scorpio, which natural 8th house, not suitable for finance matters.

The Boy is having curse of Father, Hence is in trouble. Once this curseperiod over he will be better.

For Those interested in Jyotish analysis, I give the reasons below,

Curse: Any two of the three malefics Mars(Anger), Saturn(Sorrow) and Rahu(Shock/Cheating) aspecting by Graha drishti any two of Kaarka and Bhava or Bhava Lord constitutes a curse. In Curse the Saturn ruled houses gives trouble.

Father Kaaraka Sun : Is Aspected by Rahu (2nd house aspect of Rahu) and Saturn (3rd aspect)
Kaaraka Bhava 9: Is Aspected by Rahu (9th aspect) and Saturn (10th aspect).
Kaaraka Bhava Lord, 9th Lord: Is with Sun hence like gets aspects from Rahu and Saturn

In Rahu Maha dasa and Saturn Antardasa the Father of the native died due to the above mentioned curse. Since Saturn rules the natives, Lagna His intelligence is affected, Which is causing him to fair badly in exams.

As you can see the Dasa ends in 2007/03, And Venus dasa starts. Venus is Yoga kaaraka for the native and will do well for the native in Lagna. You can expect him to do good after 2007/03 exams.

Tell him to go to Ganesha Temple regularly, And recite the below given Naarada Stotra regularly.

Dear Shri Sanjay ji ,
What are the aspects of Rahu .. Aren't these 5,7,9,12.. Getting to know about 2nd aspect for the first time...
What if one of these planets (Suppose Rahu aspects Saturn/Mars) ,is it also a curse??
Do we see curses by the planets(aspect on jupitor,sun etc) Or by aspect on Houses too.. Or we take combined effect..

Dear Amit,

Not everybody can curse you, Only people who have done good to you can curse you. The Natural law has to be violated for the curse to take effect on you. Hence malefic grahas cannot curse you. How can road side begger curse you for not giving him money?.

People who generally do good in society are represented by,

1. Moon: Mother, No explantion needed.

2. Venus: Good Spouce, Who sacrifices for many things for the individual, out of passion for native.

3. Jupiter: Elders, Gurus Who wish your well being, and provide many comforts like wealth, children, guidance and confidence during bad times.

4. Mercury: Relatives, Social friends, Who do you many small errands. Curse of Mercury is like Vishnu's Curse. When one has little or no relatives/friends. If present they could be really be given much trouble.

4. Sun: Father and authority, Who set rules for your and societies well being. Usually Sun does not literally 'curse', But it sets the rules and punishments if
broken. Trouble with father,. authority or children occurs due to this.

5. Ketu: Tapasvi's, Or renunciate monks or muni's. Ketu also does not acutally 'curse', Since it has eschewed personal level emotions. Ketu usually causes a person to mistakenly do a harm to rishi or someone like that (Read Puraanas to understand more). The curse from Ketu is usually caused by mistake (No eyes/head). But the trouble so generated leads to knowledge/gyaana or social well in general.

For The curse to be present, Firstly the above mentioned kaaraka has to be afflicted by Graha Drishti. since Curse usually leads to lot of Emotional turmoils.
Curse is only caused if the native generates Anger, Shock(due to cheating etc) or sorrow. Graha drishti of Mars, Rahu and Saturn indicates the places where the native generates these emtions on his/her surroundings.

So Atleast two of these bad emotions has to be generated by the native. Use Rahu's drishti 2,5,7,9. Acutally rahu aspects 12,9,7,5 in reverse order due to retrograde nature. Which becomes 2,5,7,9 when counted in forward.

If it's confimed that any of the above mentioned kaaraka is afflicted then look at the aspects on either the kaarka bhaava or kaaraka lord to see if the persons emotions, actions, environments are also trouble to confirm the curse. Then Use moola dasha to time the periods of sufferings.
