Nakshatra Drishti

|| Om Gurave Namah ||
Dear Jyotishas,
Today was thinking about the drishti's arising due to nakshatra, So thought will just write a few note on it.

We have two types of dristi's arising on Rashi level namely,
  1. Graha Drishti on Rashi. All grahas' (except Ketu) aspect the seventh rashi from their position. The higher grahas' Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Rahu have additional special aspects namely, 4 and 8; 5 and 9; 3 and 10 ; 5,9 and 12 (in reverse for Rahu).

  2. Rashi Dristhi. Fixed signs aspect movable and movable signs aspect fixed. The dual signs aspect each other. No sign can aspect the adjacent sign. Draw the zodiac in square form draw horizonal and diagnal lines from each rashi to remember it.
In Jyotish, we always have two (hora) basic level identifications, One lunar and the other solar. Since the above is solar aspects, we also should have lunar aspects similar to the above. The Solar division is rashi and lunar division is nakshatra.

So we have two types of Drishti on nakshatra level.

  1. Graha drishti on Nakshatra : All Graha's aspect the 15th nakshatra from their position. The additional drishti is as,

The Nakshatra's indicate the emotions/mind and Rashi indicates the resources and environments. The Nakshatra drishti indicates the desire, mantra etc gets influenced by this. The Graha drishti on nakshatra level is desire on particular mental aspect and nakshatra drishti indicates the mutual dependence of certain emotional factors.

Whereas the rashi indicates the desire and mutual influences on environment level.

Shad Rasa/Six Tastes

|| Om Gurave Namah ||
Dear Jyotishas,
Just some thoughts , will add more later. The tastes are called Rasas, Rasas are of six types.

Maharishi Parashara states them as,

kaTuxAratiktamishramadhuraaamlakashhAyakAH |
krameNa sarve viGYeyAH sUryAdInAM rasA iti || 34||

kaṭukṣāratiktamiśramadhurāamlakaṣāyakāḥ |
krameṇa sarve vijñeyāḥ sūryādīnāṁ rasā iti || 34||

Monier Williams Dictionary gives the six tastes (rasa) as
रस/ rasā
taste , flavour (as the principal quality of fluids , of which there are 6 original kinds , viz.
{madhura/मधुर} , sweet ;
{amla/आम्ल} , sour ;
{lavaNa/लवण} , salt ;
{kaTuka/कटुक} , pungent ;
{tikta/तिक्त} , bitter ; and
{kaSAya/कषाय} , astringent ;

sometimes 63 varieties are distinguished , viz. beside the 6 original ones , 15 mixtures of 2 , 20 of 3 , 15 of 4 , 6 of 5 , and 1 of 6 flavours) S3Br. &c. &c.

The six are the basic tastes, Mercury prefers mixed taste, Pure water is tastless which forms a base for all the tastes.

The Six tastes are governed by 6th house, The 2nd house is the organ of taste, the natural kaalapurusha is taurus ruled by Venus provides the basic sensory pleasure of taste. The 'Mantra' or mental notation of taste comes from 5th (Mantra bhaava) to 2nd which is 6th house. The Natural kaalapurusha lord is Mercury who likes various kinds of tastes.

Adhi Devata worship

Sri Guru Raghavendraaya Namah
Hari Jeevottamah

Dear Jyotish Gurvis and gurujis,

Kindly enlighten me when is the propitiation of a planet preferred over
the adhi devata worship? What are the fundamental differences between
how the graha manifests the results in either of the above forms of
propitiation?

Also is the adhi devata different between the times when the graha
signifies a male form vs. a female form natally? (For example, Ketu
graha conjunct Venus in Taurus)

Thank you,

Jayashree

|| Om Gurave Namah ||
Dear Jayashree,

Let me try to explain this to you by my understanding.
In Jyotish we use 9 prime factors to understand horoscope (+ Lagna), Each of the 9 parameters are further divided in 3 Levels. At the basic level these are graha, at the higher level they are Adhi devata and Pratyaadhi devatas. Just as we have three prime references to analyse chart namely, Sun, Moon and Lagna. We also have 3 Levels of each of the 9 parameters.

Graha Devata

Adhi Devata

Pratyadi Devata

Physical

Mental

Soul

Sun

Surya

Agni (Fire)

Shiva

Moon

Chandra

Apas (Water)

Chitragupta

(Table used from http://www.shrifreedom.com/jyotishNavagrahaSuktam.shtml ) Depending on the type of strength you want you can do the mantras of Graha, Adhi or Pratya adhi devata. Usually during complete pooja all the three are invoked together. For the third level you can use Karthikeya for Mars, Sadashiva (or Brahman) for Jupiter, Lakshmi for Venus and Ganesha for Ketu.

Einstein lifetime was from 1879 to 1955. Interestingly one of the most famous scientific person dint run the Lagnamasaka dasa directly containing, Lagna Lord, Sun or Jupiter in his major adult period. But in the end part of his life we get Aquarius dasa,

Instead lets analyze the dasa of Lagna, Parts of this dasa will give results of Lagna Lord Mercury and aspect of Sun in Pisces. The Mercury is also conjoined lagna lord mercury. This dasa is from 1901 to 1909, As expected he made one of his important scientific papers in this period. He formulated the theory of special relativity in 1905. In fact, He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 (his "wonderful year") and "for his services to Theoretical Physics." The aspect of Sun and Lagna Lord made him understand about properties of Light and Time. The year 1905, called the “Wonderful Year” in his life falls in this period. He published The Annus Mirabilis Papers (from Annus mirabilis, Latin for 'extraordinary year') are the papers of Albert Einstein published in the "Annalen der Physik" journal in 1905. The four articles contributed a large portion of the foundation for modern physics.

Virgo dasa, Which also also lorded by his lagna lord and aspecting Sun was another important period (1921-1926, He was awarded Nobel prize, One of the highest honour achieved in his life. Incidentally it contains the Arudha Lagna, This award is one of primary titles affecting his image in this society.

Aquarius dasa contains Jupiter, As expected we can say the person will do many activities for the social good. In those years the world war had just ended with the use of Atomic bomb. Einstein saw the far reaching effects of his knowledge. He started to lobby heavily for Nuclear disarmament and for a world government. The effect of Jupiter’s philosophy of Vasudeva Kutumba, The whole world as single family, was very evident.

In a 1949 article entitled "Why Socialism?",[37] Albert Einstein described the "predatory phase of human development", exemplified by a chaotic capitalist society, as a source of evil to be overcome. He disapproved of the totalitarian regimes in the Soviet Union and elsewhere, and argued in favor of a democratic socialist system which would combine a planned economy with a deep respect for human rights.

Jupiter’s ethereal element was also visible in his scientific thoughts On March 30, 1953, Einstein released a revised unified field theory, This theory was an attempt to unify all the physical forces in nature. This is a work which is still being done by other physics researchers for understanding this physical world.

Thus it’s very evident from Lagnamsaka dasa that Lagna Lord mercury, Sun and Jupiter played a very crucial role in all his important intellectual achievements in his life.

Web based open source free jyotish software

Om Gurave Namah

EDITOR 2022 Oct: Please note a new GitHub for authors software contribution to jyotish is at https://github.com/SanjayPrabhakaran/

The below links may be outdated. Let me know if you have a any updated link from each of the developers below.

Dear Prafulla,

 Here is a summary of all the free open source softwares available for Jyotish,
C#

Location: http://www.mudgala.com/mhora/index.html Description: Made by Ajit Krishnan, very similar to JHora in layout. Uses C# (C-Sharp). I tried compiling and editing it a bit. It works good. You would need at least express edition of C Sharp compiler to edit this software. You can download it from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualcsharp/default.aspx You would need to register the software for free to use it for long duration of time. I was able to successfully compile the program with just view warning messages. Disadvantages: It's Microsoft specific!, You would need .NET and windows on destination machines. But still I liked Ajit krishnan's work here.
PHP
Location: http://swephp.rgbsoft.net/ Description: PHP is a web server scripting tool, runs on apache and wide range of Web Servers. This port is very good for making web based Jyotish tools. This would be my recomendation. Disadvantage: The core swiss ephemeris is still a Windows DLL, so some disadvantage.
Python
Location: http://home.earthlink.net/~soloj/pysweph.htm Description: Python, is like Perl, It can be both a stand alone scripting tool and web based scripting tool like ASP and PHP. This would be I think Narayan Iyers recommendation :). But the world Python (Sarpa) puts me off! :). The advantage is that the Core swiss ephemeris is also ported so you need not depend on Swiss ephemeris!. Disadvantage: If you want to deploy it as web based tool, Then some web servers provided by some vendors dont support Python!.
Java
Location: http://astrosurf.com/jephem/astro/ephemeris/et950SwissEphem_en.htm Description: Many would like this. And you can get many programmers to get this done too. The Core swiss ephemeris is also ported I think. Check this out. Personnaly I dont use Java much because of all the over heads.
Excel Based
Location: http://www.geocities.com/sanjayprabhakaran/VDasa.zip Description: This is my contribution to the community, This is an excel sheet based tool to help you with computations which may not be available in many software programs. This is very easy to edit and work with if you know excel. If you do not have microsoft Excel, Then you can download a free open office version at http://www.openoffice.org . Disadvantage: When you use the openoffice Excel to load it, It has some some error appearing. If someone figures it out please inform me. These sheets are basically for users who know how to do the jyotish computation manually and also know to use excel.
I would still prefer a complete Perl Languange port of swiss ephemeris. Hopefully I will get one soon. Warm Regards Sanjay P

In Vedic astrology one cannot make any meaningful prognostic without the use of divisional charts. The above table gives the relative weightage for each group of divisionals. The selection of the appropriate group is essenstial. In the words of Pt. Sanjay Rath,

"D1, D2, D3, D9, D12, D30 Shadvarga for Prasna;
Add D-7 - Saptavarga for Mundane,
Add D-10, D-16 & D-60 - Dasvarga for Jataka
Add the last six and get Shodasvarga for Raj-jataka or Manushya Jataka"

For Muhurtha Saptvarga (Group of 7: Septet) can be used.

As explained by, Pt. Sanjay Rath Shadvarga (sextet) and Saptavarga(Septet) should not be used in natal horoscopy, Use dasavarga and shadvarga for natal horoscopy.

Warm Regards
